The SCRA is designed to protect servicemembers from the financial harm they might otherwise experience while on active duty: (i) because they must devote their full attention to the Nation’s defense; or (ii) because they have been called to active duty from the National Guard or reserve components of the uniformed services. The Servicemembers Civil Relief Act (“SCRA”) protections came about because servicemembers' income may be less than what they would have earned from their civilian employment before entering active duty. By providing these protections, the SCRA allows servicemembers to “devote their entire energy to the defense needs of the Nation.”
